I’m educated as an astro- & nuclear physicist: I have a deep understanding of what *is*, and about the limits of what we currently *know* with incredible based on careful experimentation & observation. Nothing mystical required, just a lot of challenging maths mostly.
As a scientific rationalist, I admit what I & we don’t *know*, without any shame or fear: maybe someday we or our descendants will know about first causes, but for now that’s simply another question to be answered — by using the scientific method without compromise.
Among the things we do know, with certainty:
There are 3 or 4 fundamental forces (depending where one sits on the open question of gravity as a force vs as a merely the curvature of space time — but that’s irrelevant for these purposes).
There are 17 “particles”, which interact via these forces — in reality, they’re not particles as we think about them at macro scales, but rather fluctuations in 17 quantum fields. Also irrelevant for these purposes.
There has never been a *single* experiment that shows anything beyond these 21 components at a near human scale: from smaller than the nano scale to at least a light year, from the mass of a single electron to that of our local star.
Are there mysteries to be discovered at interstellar scales, at Planck scales, in the twisted space time of black holes? Things that will explain the mysteries of dark matter & the evolving strength if dark energy, and raise even more mysteries? You can bet there will be.
Will we ever truly understand everything? Maybe, maybe not … almost certainly not within our lifetimes.
And I’m totally okay with that, because it’s all real, Bill. Not made up stories to explain mysteries.
I will admit that Buddhist traditions have something valuable to add that most religious/spiritual traditions don’t: thousands of years of careful observation about *the self* and the nature of *humans*. Truly unmatched perspectives about the subjective experience of “being”; but that’s been extended into purely speculative interpretations of the nature of Reality, and that’s nice again the height of hubris.
And that’s about all I have to say about that, for now at least.
